this is my beetle, the list of things that are needed to be done are endless... new floorpans heaters channels and both front quarters to start with... it took me weeks of nitromoors to remove 6 different colours!! wish me luck
Looks like you have a mission on your hands........I can relate to that! I am helping someone do a late 50's (I think) Beetle up......I am doing the welding, he had a Ragtop and the body was shot........so he has bought a decent body and we have cut the ragtop frame out of the old one and are in the process of putting it in the new one.
the main shell is really good, but the front quarter and floor are just knackered. just spent nigh on 600 quid for replacement panels. welding starts on saturday!
Looks a better project base than my bug was....it looked okish before i started...it had newish floorpans strong 1200 engine...then day of its MOT i saw a slight scab by the carpet edge, so i pulled and the front heater channel came off with the carpet
Then i found the rear quarters had been made of filler (gotta admit it was quite some skillful sculpting..must av been done by a plasterer) and who did the pans didn't fancy doing the channels so filled em in with mastik.
Good luck..i shall watch this with great interest as id love another one
with the crappy paint removed i can see the spot welds...
it didnt come out very easy at all.... 1 side down 1 to go...
there just arent enough hours in the day and so many panels to replace.. the heater channels are hiding behind the floor pans... and so is a rear quarter!!!
i dont think i could part with this one now.. grabbed it at a bargain 300 quid off a bloke who had split up from his wife and she wanted it off the garden and he didnt have room for it at his new place.... really hope i havnt bitten off more than i can chew though i seem to be hitting hurdle after hurdle
yeh i know what you mean it just gets my goat when i keep uncovering shoddy repairs done by past owner/s. thats why iv gone for the option of replacing any panel that has been bodged or banged. i want it race look when its done with a powder blue paint job and matte black alloys but the interior is being painted too and i want no carpets just 2 bucket seats and a roll cage so i need the metal work on the inside to be as good as the outside
looks a good project you have.i sold my bug about 3 months ago as it was well rotten still wish i hadn't.oh well it paid for the welder that i'm gonna use on the mk5 cortina, the mk2 transit, the other mk5 cortina and the mk4 cortina
hahaha bugs.. always the way. i have a 2 ltr motor up my sleeve for it uncle joe although the wife would say something like "at that price over my dead body!!"
Theres your first mistake, never let the other half know how much things cost.
My wife is constantly amazed at the number of "FREEBIES" that I keep bringing home for my splitty.
