Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to welding and have just replaced a dead sip 105 with a used Murex tradesmig. It is a lovely machine compared to the nasty little sip (the wire feed is like butter), but whereas the sip would blow through .9mm steel on its 2 highest settings, the Murex will only make passable butt welds on settings 7 and 8 out of 8. Anything below this and the weld just sits on the metal, and on settings 1-3, I can pick the weld off with pliers. This cannot be right.
I am welding with .6 wire and co2 pub gas at 10lpm. The wire feed seems to work best on 2.5-3 with a voltage setting of 7 or 8.
Anyway, I've checked the other threads with similar problems (which seem to be a murex theme), and it seems that the advice is that it could be the contactor, capacitors, voltage switch, earth clamp or any variety of diodes, and some threads have ended without a resolution which left me in the dark.
Now, I am NOT an electrician and have had the cover off. Its a bit dusty in there, but nothing looks obviously rusted or burned. I don't want to go touching anything and electricuting myself, as I fear that even unplugged, there might be stored voltage in there. I have a multimeter, but have no clue where to connect it or what to look for. Much of the advice on other threads just goes over my head. I've replaced my torch and disassembled and cleaned the earth clamp and lead but that's the limit of what I've done. I've run it from the wall and an extension lead and this doesn't make a difference either.
many thanks!
Brian
