I'm well behind the game on this kind of thing, but I'm aware there are a lot of IT and phone-savvy folk on her, so here goes.
In our French gaff we have an arrangement with one of the neighbours that we can piggyback on his broadband wi-fi signal when we're over to give us basic Internet access. It's been an absolute godsend and all I've paid for it is a decent botle of whisky. But it looks like he'll be moving on soon and the arrangement will come to an end.
Now in France broadband is pricey, and normally comes bundled with a load of other stuff I don't want. It also means I'd be paying for 24x365 always on when I'm only there a couple of months per year maximum. All I want/need is basic broadband for a spot of email/surfing, plus occasional remote working. I've seen people using smartphones as a kind of modem to connect their laptop/PC to the Internet, but I have no interest or intention of owning a smartphone. My dumb phone does me just fine thanks.
So what options do I have? I'm aware that there are USB dongles available, but I'm not really sure how they work. For my mobile I'm with Giffgaff and they do 'goodybags' that last for a month and have varying amounts of Data bundled in with the minutes and texts. £18 gets you 9GB of Data, for example. I'm currently on a £10 goodybag that includes 4GB of Data that I never use.
Any recommendations?
