OK so i have cheated big time here, i have bought a 490x490x10mm mild steel off cut and i WAS going to buy a load of angled steel and make myself a table until i saw this...

So my simple little mind got working and thought "hey, you can't weld for toffee yet, don't get ahead of yourself". So in my mind, i can manage 4 plug welds to piece together a simple small table to practise my welding on. I know it will be very thin metal onto very thick metal, but hopefully it will take enough just to hold the top plate in place and be strong enough for me to turn it upside down without risking toes.
So the plan is, strip the paint off the top sections with a wire brush wheel, build the frame, turn it upside down, plop on the plate (probably offset a bit so i have a couple of inches of shelf at the front, then a gap at the back where i can put my torch), plug weld the 4 pre-drilled holes (maybe make them bigger) and done. Mini welding bench for less than £60
What do you guys think? I am guessing that frame will be no thicker than 1.5mm, plug welding that onto 10mm thick steel plate is going to be tricky i am guessing. I was thinking if i focus more on the thick plate, maybe preheat it, i should get a tiny bit of penetration just to stick them together.
Correct me, guide me, flame me, tell me if i am being stupid
