Is it totally OK to mount a vice on a milling table in this direction? The 'conventional' direction would result in restricted Y travel and lots of overhang,.....should I be concerned of the weight of such a vice on a smaller machine in general? Could it damage the table/milling machine? Generally I don't need to wind the table to the extreme ends of the X axis so would the weight not cause a problem?
If I can use this vice am I right in thinking that the best position is for the middle of the jaw opening to line up with the center of the chuck? Hopefully that should help keep the weight central, hold most sizes of stock that I'll ever use and keep X travel to a minimum??
The second pictures shows the vice that I've been using up to now inside this oversize one.
