Hello all,
I'm a complete welding virgin and decided to teach myself MIG welding,I used to fix cars for a living once upon a time and now left the trade. I'm pretty good with mechanical/engineering things in general so my plan is to self teach myself with help of you tube and online literature.
1. I did a bit of a research here and on youtube and decided to buy a MIG160 from uptimewelding , I got the package yesterday and for the money it looks robust and well made.
2. Bought a auto darkening helmet
3. Will be ordering a fireproof welding jacket and gloves , will source some safely boots, I'm sure I had steel toe pair knocking about somewhere.
4. As for gas I narrowed down I will go with SGS and I have a motor parts direct nearby my place and I got a quote of £68+VAT (£85+VAT deposit) for a 20L bottle which seems a fair deal. Plus I read somewhere here that there is a £20 cashback offering for forum members, so all in all it will work well considering I will be a very occasional welder.
5. As for regulators should I go with two gauges or one with an air flow meter? bit lost on this one so any help is appreciated
6. Gas hose from regulator to MIG, what type of hose should I look for? my MIG has just a clamp on type ( not threaded) nipple I'm not sure what sort of connection on the regulator as I haven't bought it yet, any help on this would be greatful
So to summarise do I need anything else apart from what listed below to get going?
1. MIG welder
2. Welding helmet
3. Fireproof jacket ,gloves and a CO2 fire extinguisher which I already have in case things go wrong
4. SGS 5% CO2/Argon bottle
5. Regulator
6. Hose to connect regulator to welder
Many thanks.
