You should be able to find some sheet by searching the Yellow Pages for "Steel Stockholders". They normally sell steel in 2m *1m sheets (they fit in the back of my Renault once they've been folded in half).
It's a good idea to phone around - some of the suppliers aren't keen on selling to the public and charge a fortune. Around £20 seems to be the going price.
If there are any fabricators near you they might have a useful scrapbin. I tend to offer the guys near me £5 for a whole load of useful sheet pulled from their bin.
I would go to a local sheet metal or fabrication shop and buy a few offcuts off them, you be supprised what they throw away. Would cut it into a few strips aswell for a small fee.
Seem like small quantities to me
But delivery charges are extortionate!!
As i said, for small timers like yourselves, go to a local fab shop, (Smaller places are better) and buy a few offcuts from them. Many places will throw away sheet smaller than 1mx0.5m, some places even larger pieces.
The buying steel from a local fabricator idea is good plan. My steel supplier is also a fabricator, and I tend to buy a sheet, then pull much the same quantity of different thickness bits from their scrap bin. At least for car welding I never seem to need any more than 0.5m * 0.2m.
They think I'm mad folding up nice flat sheets into two so I can fit them in the back of my Renault.
Same as me that Daz, the last 2 machines we had were cheap but did the job and on their retirement they gave up their carcass and a few motors, steel bed gave up the ghost a couple of weeks ago, thats prepped and ready for future use. Happy re-cycling. Vin
