Does anyone know anything about winches? @winchman ?
I got offered a cast bronze winch and haggled it down to $55. Must be almost worth that in scrap. It’s heavy as! I can’t find any info on it on the web, takes a steel wire rope. No idea what I’ll do with it atm. I like it though!
I would say if it’s bronze/brass then it’s probably a sail windlass, probably not much good for owt elseDoes anyone know anything about winches? @winchman ?

Possibly a winch for raising or lowering a swing keel?
Could be an old quality trailer winch - how long is the wire rope?
Sure I've seen something like that in a boatyard for raising /lowering <stuff> in and out of <other stuff> attached to an A-frame. Whether that's what it was originally intended for, I've no idea.

I've no idea what its name was.I think you mean a derrick winch
No a coffee grinder is a totally different beast, as are most of your sailing type winches. The coffee grinder piece comes from the two handed remote winch drive as seen on large racing yachts.Possibly used on racing yatchs for raising and lowering large and heavy sails. Known as “ coffee grinders” .
Never seen one but what can you buy for $55? must be worth that if you have a use for it?
