The oil system on my resto project car is of a very old design & the bearings are all white metal no shells.
On a modern car the oil pump is usually sited in the sump & can only pull oil. The design of my oil system has an achilles heel in that leakage can lead it to pull air more easily than oil (see attached drawing) leading to oil starvation to the bearings.
The problem lies with the oil reservoir situated before the oil pump. This is designed to hold a level of oil so the pump will always pull oil on startup. The reservoir has a screw down lid & this needs to be completely air tight to create a suction to pull oil from the sump.
Thus far I have cut gaskets & applied materials like Hermitite , Stag Welseal but non a completely effective. I recently stretched an undersized 35 mm O ring (any bigger & it squeezes out of the joint) over the 44 mm screw thread. This has proved very effective & for the time seems to be it is best option.
Any suggestions for a better material bearing in mind it will come into contact will the engine oil?
