Anyone remember it..?
I'm sure that the bikers of a certain age in this parish will remember the foul-smelling black greasy boil-in-the-tin wax which sort of disappeared around the time that O-ring chains became popular on bikes.
I have a little 125 that get's abused regularly as my winter commuter and over Christmas I borrowed a friends 30 year old tin of Linklyfe to treat it's battered little salt ravaged chain. This stuff is amazing! It's still coating the chain now despite all the salt spray, and hardly any of it flings off.
Now, I've been thinking that it can't be that hard to home-brew some of this stuff seeing as you can't get it anymore. I know that Putoline do a similar product called Chain Wax and that seems to be the only one available nowadays - but where's the fun in that, eh
Was chatting to the 'Old fella' about it recently and he reckons they used tallow, paraffin wax, and moly grease as a homebrewed recipe for their trials bike chains back in the day, but he can't remember the quantities of each ingredient - or in fact if it matters.
So what say ye, good folk of the forum? Any ideas as to a rancid concoction of waxy greasy goodness for non o-ring chains?
