Do BOC agents normaly supply the bottles with a key as i got a bottle today and it has no key to open the gas.Is it ok to just use a socket to open it, thanks.
Not usually supplied free, reps used to give them away but you have to buy them nowadays, ask for a spindle key, they're usually only a pound or so, a small square socket will do it but don't over tighten it and strain the valve
I'd use the proper thing just in case you have to close the valve in an emergency, you wouldn't want an ill fitting socket slipping off. Keep the key in the valve when using the gas, and hide it from unauthorised fingers when the bottle is not in use.
Ive open`d them in emergencies by using two sockets put one 1/4 socket square over the valve then allen key, or allen socket to fit that then ratchet, if you follow that. Then you wont mess up the square on the valve stem.
