Hi everyone, I'm a relative newby, although I've scoured this forum for about three months looking for pointers as to which mig set to buy. Taking note of most indications, I contacted Steve at weldequip, who was extremely helpful and as a result, I am the proud owner of a portamig 185. This set is the dog's. So easy to set up and use, I simply assembled it, turned the controls to mid settings, tried a run, which wasn't quite right then increased the wire feed and the power and hey presto! within a few minutes I was using it for real.
I commenced a mig welding course in September, completed level 1 a couple of weeks before the Christmas break then out of interest, used a session to try arc welding and managed to get a few decent runs going. Level 2 commences in January and if I pass it, I have to opportunity to do a level 1 Tig and arc course. Given that I've just retired, I'm not pursuing a career change and don't really need the qualifications but I may continue out of interest.
The point I wanted to make was that the portamig was easier to use, with better results than the murig and miller sets I've been using at college, notwithstanding the amount of use and possible abuse they have suffered.
Given that I have only used the portamig for a couple of hours work, I am absolutely delighted with it. It's simply cracking gear. And no I didn't get it for nowt! nor am I paid to promote or sell them.
One very happy customer.
All my very best wishes to every member of the forum.
Jim.
