If you have just started up & bought yourself a small MIG here's some good advice. If you have bought a new hobby MIG & it has been supplied with a small plastic hand-held mask - bin it! Buy yourself an electronic react-a-light shield, which are now inexpensive & can be bought for £30 or so on eBay (I shouldn't be telling you this as mine retail @£70 or so!!).
These things make the job 100% EASIER. Firstly, you can see what you are doing all the time & secondly, you can keep both hands on the job; one hand on the MIG torch trigger and the other hand steadying the torch on the back of the neck - this will give you a much better chance of a nice, straight 'run'.

Oh, and don't bin the little Mickey Mouse hand-shield, they are handy for bystanders watching you & for getting in under those awkward spots.
