Read the tutorial at the top it’s in green
Yes you need an earth return in all arc welding be it mig Tig or mma.I have read them, though I can’t find a mention of the clamp in gas MIG welding... hence my question!
Recon he knew he needed the clamp but wanted reassuring.Again, I agree. I would just advise not trying to weld until he understands why the clamp is important.

But we wall started somewhere. No question is a stupid one, If you don't know the answer.
You wouldn't complete the circuit otherwise.
needs a path back to the source to create the arc.The hilarious part of this is still...no-one has told me why the clamp is so important!?! Is it a trade secret?!!!!

Much like cutting the negative lead on a bedside lamp. No circuit. No light.
TBH, a welding course that didn't teach you the basics of setting up a welder, Is not a good course. even a 1 day course should do that. Keep at it, ask questions on here and practice, practice, practice. What mask do you have? and a decent pair of welding gloves as well. Remember as well, that the hobby gas bottles don't last long.
That's a start then. Have you used your welder on gasless. I have the 105EN and so far it's been good for me
