I am a retired mechanical engineer with a reasonable knowledge of stick welding but I'm new to MIG welding. My inverter welder is getting old and troublesome and as I'm now welding more thinner gauge steel I decided to invest in a low cost MIG set up. After much internet viewing I eventually bought a Rohr mig 200. This was driven by what I could actually buy as I live in France and getting hold of stuff here is way more difficult than the UK. I haven't used the machine yet as I'm waiting for wire and gas (another long story) so while I'm waiting I've been checking the machine over and getting familiar with the controls. For a Chinesium bit of kit it don't seem too badly bolted together but I'm confused regarding the controls, the booklet is useless, it just says plug in and switch on. First question...what is the electrical difference between MIG and MMA and why is there a toggle switch between the two. Both use a continuous arc and it seems to me that only the shape of the electrode is different. Second question (more complicated).....the two pots controlling power levels are marked MIG volts and MMA amps respectively. not understanding this at all. surely volts and amps settings are applicable to both MIG and MMA. YouTube videos that I've watched don't explain this as the user just refers to "adjusting MIG power level" by turning up the voltage pot, no mention of amps control at all. This machine doesn't seem to operate the same way as similar machines I looked at on the net, they all seemed to be "normal" with voltage and current being adjustable for any type of weld. The Rohr welder is also weird in that the digital displays only light up when the machine is live and don't show preset values, I knew this when I bought the machine but weird just the same.
