In-earth gases

I had a thought about having a torch that burned the oxy-acetylene but around the flame an in earth gas such as argon or co2. Let me change that a bit, Basically I want an in in-earth atmosphere around the weld as in tig.
Any thoughts anyone?

My knowledge of this is superficial but I thought I had read that the combustion gasses of the oxy acet. flame provided a shielding environment as long as you have the mix right and the flame in the right place relative to the weld pool? Graham.

Even if it were possible to pipe an inert gas around an oxy acetylene nozzle, you would never get the flame to burn properly, to run a neutral flame you need approximately two and a half times as much oxygen as acetylene, this consists of equal quantities provided by the blowtorch, the remainder is absorbed by the outer envelope of the flame from the atmosphere, this is why the neutral flame is called a reducing flame, ie it reduces the oxygen in the outer envelope which then has a shielding effect, pretty basic theory really for anyone trained in oxy acetylene processes.

... at the weld... the outer flame "deals" with the stuff that may cause problems, acting like shield gas ( at least thats how I understand it...
