I've been thinking recently about my vehicles as have been using the quiet time to try and knock a few maintenance jobs off the list. I have a 14' Ifor Williams plant trailer which for many years has carried everything heavy I've ever needed to move (up to and beyond 3.5 tonne). It is twin axle and has the old Mitchelin 225/75 R 10 tyres which to in all intent appear as forklift tyres. These have a very good load carrying capacity when fully inflated but unfortunately are no longer available. The only option is to buy new Ifor Williams rims which take a tyre not dissimilar to a car / van type. Obviously quite an investment for five rims and tyres (I always carry a spare).
Regardless of the cost, my dilemma is that these tyres and rims just don't seem as durable as the original set-up. I know of two other people who have similar trailers and have had to buy the new rims and both seem to have far more problems with them than they previously did. Being more like a car tyre, they seem to be more prone to punctures and due to the tyre size (can't remember what it is) seem to be limited to some rather naff Chinese ones.
Looking at newer, similar capacity Ifor Williams Trailers, these have three axles.
Just wondered if any Forum members had any experiences good or bad with this. I'm torn between splashing out on a whole set of rims and tyres (for what is otherwise a perfectly useable trailer) and subsequently having problems or putting the money toward a tri axle trailer. Any thoughts?
