Identifying inserts.

I have a load of unmarked inserts and would find it a whole lot easier to get a holder that fits them.

How do you go about identifying them?

I have found 2 threading inserts . Do you use a different size for each pitch or does it depend on diameter.

I hope to get my first real screwcutting done over xmas....

Type identifying carbide inserts into google.

Carbide depot has some good charts and will be one of the top hits.

Threading inserts tend to cover a range of pitches depending on type, but I would stick with HSS for threading.

Threading inserts only cut a particular pitch, so you need a different one for each thread you are cutting. The diameter is not important.

Not entirely.

An triangle type 16ER AG60 insert, probably the most common type will cut a range 0.5 - 3.0mm and 48 - 8TPI (60 degree)

That covers most threads the average Joe will want to cut.

Called Partial Profile and will indeed cut a range of threads, they will however not cut the crest so if that needs to be done to conform a second operation would be required.

For the home guy the partial profiles are definitely the way to go.

Very true but I doubt many on here are overly concerned with the crests.

Whisper a file over it and if it screws in call it good!

The amount of screwcutting vids I've watched, the pros ain't overly bothered about them most of the time either.

Don't get me wrong though, as I said for home guys the partial profile are the way to go, for threads that have to conform to spec then full profiles are the way to go.
