Great site! I've been reading these pages for a few weeks and finally decided to join. I don't have a Mig at the moment but I've used a few pro quality ones in the past. Now I want one for home use, but all the 'affordable' models seem to have their problems. I want to weld a variety of steel from thin sheet to smallish angle: any ideas?
I've been looking at a used Cemont Magistar, but I don't know anything about them. Where are they made? Spares available?

As for actual welders I don't know, If your wanting to weld stuff 4/5/mm or less I think a 150 amp somthing would just about do....?
I think you can just about get away with a 90 amp somthing for 3mm but no more (see http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/clarke-90.htm)

and I assume the rest fall somwhere in between that?

I don't know much about welders, but I thought it would be nice to reply anyway

I would wait for some more experienced people to give thier opinion

Thats my welder ^ , just just about does 5mm at a stretch, and can do 0.8mm just baout without blowing through (might do better with a more expert hand...)

Thanks for your replies. If nobody's heard of them perhaps I'll give it a miss and look at something else.

I don't think Cemont sold a lot of welders in the UK. Worth using the forum search for indications of Cemont as a brand. Perfectly OK but you could get better if you are spending money seems to be the feel.

Never heard of the Magistar. I couldn't find specs for that so if you can't either it's a good idea to avoid it and pick up something known. We'd probably struggle to help you find spares too.

Cemont are made in Italy & distributed in the UK from Shropshire. Not sure on spares availability/age of that particular model.

Bought Clarke 175 instead

Thanks for all your advice: decided against it after all. Just bought a Clarke 175 for a very good price locally, so hope to be giving it a testing soon. It looks like a good machine and it has a minimum current of 28 amps. A few people have left good comments about this model, although it seems to have been discontinued. Any ideas why?

Yeah I have fallen foul of that . Weldequip seems to still have these available but he has finished for Xmas.

I have been taking too long to ensure I made the right decision but now feel I need to get a MIG quickly. I tried to find a 175 locally to see if its not that much more than Weldequips price and I would take the hit because we really need to use it over Xmax but failed to find any locally.

WHat a mess...............why is there only 24 hours in a day LOL

clarke ones are ok for what you need. 28 should be ok for thinish stuff. and will weld 5-6mm at a push me thinks
