Hello all,
Noobly-registered have read the forum on and off for a while, it's sucking me in again. Great resource, knowledge, characters and chat.
LIve in the Borders Region of Scotland -Hawick. Used mig and gas oxy-acetylene in garage work in the mid-to late-80s. Handled arc/stick too, best forgotten.
Best to assume, as I do, that I'm a complete beginner (again), as it was so long ago, I'd mainly worked in IT and electronics since.
Taking things slowly but want to have the capability and not be dependent on others for little (and not so little) bits of (car, maybe bike) welding.
Lacking anywhere to work/practice at the moment so have no immediate questions/issues.
Have acquired much essentials, gloves, auto-dim helmet, much PPE ... Have 10L SGS hobby Argon95%-CO2-5%, regulator, pea-shooter, an already bewildering collection of clamps, m6 tips in 0.6,0.8 and 0.9. Solid steel wire in 0.6 and 0.8, some stainless and so on ... Acquired new a SIP T136.
I know some older SIP cheapie ones have a bad rep, but this seems to address the main issues: wandering motor-speed (has a separate 24V supply for this), the wire-feeder clamp/lock reminds me of the [names forgotten] professional machines I done some training on at Livingston MOTEC in 85-86). Has a wire/curtain-rod liner.
Will mainly be looking to re-acquaint myself with and acquire some competence and confidence with thinner metal. Practical experience was mainly with front and/or rear-ended mk2 Cavaliers and Astras, mainly near-new and not yet rusted. Have a '94 Cavalier and a '68 Viva at opposite poles as far as rust damage is concerned, the Viva the worst. The Cavalier has had an easy life but continuing use is taking its toll.
