This post is to hopefully show the benefits of losing weight and exercising and hopefully encourage others to improve their health if possible. Please don’t bother posting negative posts and if you have no interest in losing weight or being healthy then please just move on, this thread isn’t for you.
Due to multiple reasons I found myself 11.5kg heavier in 2018 than I was in 2017 so in October I finally got my act together and started dieting and exercising. My work get some health folk in pretty regularly to give you a health check-up and even though apart from my weight everything was okay but not great it was the extra kick up the pants I needed. This week I re-did the test and the results were fantastic so I was over the moon. AXA who run the tests have a Health Age Calculator and even though it’s probably only a very rough guide and I could drop dead tomorrow it said my Health Age was 11 years less than my actual age.
I do most of my exercise in my lunch break, there is a gym very close to my work and a very good hill next to the gym. I do hill sprints twice a week with two colleagues, weights 3 times a week with a colleague and cycle to work.
Exercise is fine but to lose weight you need to eat less calories. I’ve cut out all junk food, for a couple of months I cut out pasta, rice, potatoes etc, didn’t drink alcohol until Christmas and have only had 5 pints this year and must admit am not missing it. I read up on Flaxseed so have added that to my diet each day, I would recommend giving it a try and taking 2 teaspoons twice daily. Have a read up on flaxseed and it’s health benefits.
My results from 11/10/2018
Weight 97.7kg (clothed)
BMI 31.76 – Obese
Waist – 105cm
Waist to height ratio - 0.6 - this is the best indicator for my bodyfat and needs to be less than 0.5. Statistically you have a much lower chance of getting type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer if your ratio is below 0.5.
Blood pressure – 124/87 – high blood pressure stage 1 due to my diastolic reading being above 80.
Blood glucose – 5.83 - should be less than 6.1 so just ok
Total cholesterol – 4.61 - desirable less than 5.01 so just ok
HDL Cholesterol – 1.37 – average
Total/HDL Cholesterol – 3.4 – target <4.5
My results from 13/02/2018
Weight – 85.4kg (clothed) 83.4kg (first thing in the morning in undies) – lost 13kg
BMI 27.9 – Overweight, but I am always higher due to more muscle. Waist to height ratio is the best indicator for me.
Waist – 88.1cm – lost 17cm
Waist to height ratio - 0.5 – healthy/normal but 0.46 is ideal
Blood pressure – 107/61 – lower end of normal which is fantastic as blood pressure increases with age.
Blood glucose – 4.77 - should be less than 6.1 so very good
Total cholesterol – 3.7 - desirable less than 5.01 so very good
HDL Cholesterol – 1.6 – desirable
Total/HDL Cholesterol – 2.3- target <4.5 so very good
Resting heart rate has also dropped 10bpm.
Anyway the above hopefully will encourage others needing to lose some weight and get back into some fitness that there are some clear health benefits to doing so.
If you can get a check-up done, see what your numbers are and go from there.
