Hi All
First post, having discovered this great new site. Am learning to weld in order to keep a) my 1970 VW type2 the right side of the MOT police
b) the bills down.
I have inherited a Sealey 150/5 from my Dad who also got it second hand so could be 5-10 years old.
Alll seems to work OK and I have practised a bit and I think I have the
current and speed settings about right for 1 -2mm steel. The problem is that I think the gas supply is 'iffy'. With the welder off I can pull the trigger and occassionally the valve does not let gas through. Of course when I am welding you cannot hear it although I get suspicious when the fireworks (sputter) gets excessive. Having said that I'm not experienced enough to know if it is due to no gas or contamination (ok rust !!).
I have taken the torch apart and played about with the brass valve inside it. I thought I fixed it but now I'm not sure. I have looked at buying a new torch to eliminate this unknown but they mostly say 'euro fitting'. Will this fit the Sealey which does not have this fitting (if I take it the new one apart) ?
I am aso getting through the disposables quickly - not much more than 30-45 mins of on off (mostly off) welding say 3 foot of seam - does that sound right ?
I like the idea of getting my gas from the pub. It seems an ideal way of combining my hobbies - any idea what sort of regulator is required for this set-up ?
I realise that this is loads of Q's for a first post - sorry. Any help much appreciated.
