i have a clarke no gas 90 mig i am thinking of changing to gas
can i still use up the gassless wire as i have two new reels of it
do you think i should change over?
cheers and beers wally
Depends what you are welding Wally. If it's thin sheet such as car bodywork you will see a real improvement by switching to gas; you can still use up your flux-cored wire on any thicker stuff (chassis etc.).
weldequip
You wouldn't want to use gasless wire with gas though. I can't see it doing any harm to the weld, but the additional gas shielding would have no effect. Better to buy some orginary mild steel wire for use with gas shielding, and keep the expensive gasless wire for whenever you need to weld outside (gasless wire works much better when it's windy).
Gasless flux cored wire produces a gas shield but not enough to completely protect the weld metal. The weld metal hs to be designed to remain ductile even with the ingress of the atmosphere, mainly Nitrogen. The weld metal contains high levels of Aluminium which helps reduce the embrittlement caused by Nitrogen.
Using a gas shield will restrict these essential reactions and the likely outcome is a brittle weld.
