I'm going to make a pair of garage doors (for myself) and in all the tears I've had of making things, this is a first for these. I'm intending to have two side hung doors (from metal posts) and each will be about 2.0 m high and 1.1 m wide. The intention is to use a metal frame and clad on the outside with tounge and grove or ship-lap timber. Before I start I have a couple of questions that hopefully will get a response from those who have made similar in the past. These are:
1. Would you use box section or angle for the doors? Both have their virtues but I'm mainly concerned with rigidity. Ease of fixing the cladding is also of consideration.
2. Hinges - I was thinking of using heavy duty butt hinges welded on but is this the best solution?
Any thoughts gratefully received.
