Fridge compressors?

Does anyone know a cheap source of fridge compressors?

I'm after, ideally, 3 matching ones so fleabay isn't much good this time round.

You should get them for free as it costs them to recycle them.

Well there are two tips near me, both with CCTV so they are not willing to let you take anything.

I just binned 3 big Matsushita scroll compressors.

Freecycle or Freegle &c. People are always giving fridges away because otherwise they have to pay to have them collected.

If you're making a compressor get freezer compressors, they start more easily.

out of interest, why is this? i would have thought freezer compressors would be more powerful.

You have to be a bit carefull with fridge and freezer compressors .. get it de-gased before you cut into the pipe work
'cos it's a big no no to vent the refridgerant gas into the atmosphere ...last time I looked it was a heafty £2000 fine ...jeff...

unless the appliance was scrapped do to it leaking in the first place

They have more torque, try to get something more than 100 watts, fridges are about 90. For some reason when you take the pump out of a fridge it doesn't like starting.

i wouldnt bother just get them cut your not going to save the planet with 3 less compressors been de gassed who would u pay to do it

Exactly. I have one on loan from work but think they'll want it back soon.

I would say completely the opposite, get one from a cooler (bottle cooler) as they will likely be high starting torque motors, fridge freezers and freezers are low starting torque normally.

local air conditioning mending place often had scrap compressors, some of them had 3/4hp motors.

Just don't get a Chinese one from a 7-bottle cooler; ours has just died. Everything seems to be running fine but the compressor produces neither heat nor cold in any of the pipework. I guess either the pump isn't pumping or the gas has piddled away.

I meant freezer motors have more torque than the fridge motors, certainly been the case for all the ones I've played with.

How much air will a fridge compressor produce? Would you be better with an old belt drive compressor plodding away?
