Hi,
Hoping I can get some advice here: I'd like to learn a technique that would allow me to form strengthening ribs in sheet steel. Ultimately the sheet would be made into repair sections for my Land Rover footwells (actually both my Land Rovers need doing).
The ribs in question are, IIRC, about 6" long and 3/4" wide and about 1/4" deep and would be formed into 0.9mm sheet.
They can be seen in the pictures below:
I believe that in the factory they would be pressed, but I'd like an alternative for my workshop. I'm happy to make my own tooling to do this, I have a mig welder as well as metalforming tools (folder, vice, anvil, blowtorch, hammers and dollys).
I'm not sure whether to make some sort of a punch from a horizontal, 'bullet-shaped' piece of toolsteel (as shown in my drawing below) and tap the shape into the (heated?) sheet as I move along or whether I would need some sort of rolling wheel or use one of my spare bottle jacks to make a press.
I can either do this as a one-off job or make something a little more substantial that I could donate to one of the owners clubs after I have finished with it.
I should point out that common practice is to delete the ribs and just use plain sheet but as I'm aiming to keep things looking authentic I'd likke the correct shapes on display.
MAny thanks as always.
