It's not the big six series with the rusty floor, but I am welding a car! The motor in question is an E21 BMW 316 dating from 1983. It is becoming a trackday special, so niceties such as interior are not needed!
OK I have pictures. taken using my Nokia N95, so although they are nominally taken with a 5Mpix camera, it's not a real camera, so a bit blurry!
First thing I did today was this...
There's some tyres and big bags of blankets under the drivers side.
Then I cut/ground out the hole in the front chassis rail.
I found a convenient piece of 1.5mm channel steel lying around, I don't think it's an important part of anything! Gave it a good trimming and grinding to make it shiny, banged it in position and clamped it up...
Prior to giving it a damn good MIGging.
I plug welded both sides onto the rail, and welded around the edges as best I could - welding upside down and one handed is tricky! The welds need a tidy up, and once covered by paint/underseal, you'll never know they were there!
You can see the hole where the factory jacking point was in the pics, I have chopped out the patch that a previous owner had applied, and started fitting a patch made out of an ex NHS steel bin. The metal's a bit thinner than I thought, tricky to weld. I'll be sticking bigger stuff inside to form the footings for my bolt in roll cage, so it's OK being a bit thin, as long as I can weld it without blowing holes everywhere!
As I got stuck into welding the patch on, I noticed spatter going everywhere, which turned out to be because I had run out of gas. So I need to take my bottle to be filled up before I can do any more.
Bloody good afternoon of fun, manly work type stuff. Now having a few beers
