Putting a threaded bushing into the hole will not be difficult.Once you have ground the jaws, I wonder if you could re-purpose the holes for jaw pads. See:

use an anaerobic fixative, for water pipes, I buy some inexpensive one made in Poland. It is not as strong as the specialized Loctite's. It breaks down with a little heat (up to +150 I believe). A reverse hammer will work too.I could not think of a way yesterday, but maybe a headed pin with an O-ring on it would retain the pads but still allow an unthreaded hole.
Would save the grey hairs produced from trying to tap some tough material.
