That is interesting, and explains one of the unique features of the compact and light IFL welders - they use planar transformers, which use thin copper sheets instead of wire windings. This combats the "skin effect" at the high frequencies ( 50 to 100 kHz ) used in inverter welders, where current only flows in a very thin outer layer of a conductor. At 50kHz, this is only 300 microns thick. Other inverter welders usually use multi-strand "Litz" wire in their transformers.
