Empty HP cylinders any way of getting rid?

Took over a workshop couple of years ago, which came complete with several empty HP welding cylinders. At time I contacted the gas companies concerned, thinking they would arrange to collect. No interest whatsoever, so wonder if anyone has any ideas of getting rid, other than delivering them back to to gas co's? Cylinders are Air Products, Messer, and Distillers (?)....................

Most council run tips have a compound for gas bottles, the one local to me takes them no questions asked.

They make excellent bollards to protect corners of buildings, or anything that is prone to getting hit by a lorry or heavy plant.

my local council tip, doesn't take gas bottles.

I'm surprised that in today's world where manufacturers are required to ensure the proper recycling of there products at all the gas companies seem free to wash their hands of the bottles that they like to remind us belong to them.

In Somerset they charge to take cylinders, but if you check with Somerset Council they are in a blind if they do or don't.

Wiltshire they will not charge, but checking is advised.

My local scrap yard will take them.
So ring around and ask.

Ours takes Cylinders, sadly they wont let you have any when you visit though. --every cylinder imaginable, calor Gaz and other makes, fire extinguishers, pub bottles every colour of various size gas bottles----- I have tried and called their bluff saying I contacted the council -ask at the tip and all that. but it is run on behalf of the council by SITA. so much for recycling-- you can take stuff in but cant bring anything out.

Thanks..................I will ask at local tip, but never ever seen any HP cylinders there before?

Might contact the gas co's and ask for cylinders to be collected, and if they cant help, will suggest that I will deliver them to local depots at £50 a bottle.

All you get is --Cameras eveywhere we cant even have stuff for ourselves--Ha ha ha-- there are cameras everywhere, possibly active. But who would check them anyway.

Not at the wiltshire ones you can't...

Apparently shipping something to china to be melted down and made into cheap crap is far more 'environmentally friendly' than letting someone local get more use out of it.

If tip is council run then I guess getting things more difficult, but certainly not impossible..............

A few years ago i saw a replica Cannon at the Tendring show, it was build from an oxy bottle cut off with smaller bottle welded in the front. Reinforcing rings welded round it out of flat bar & the cascabel on the breech end made from a cut off tow ball. The whole thing was mounted on an oak carriage & looked rather good. Might have to make one meself. Now if it could go bang n Nov the 5th it would be even better!

Hi, My local BOC depot loading bay had the top 9" of an Oxygen cylinder with a clapper in it as a bell to summon service. A friend of a friend used an Oxygen cylinder for a boiler on his quarter scale traction engine, He cut the thing by hand with a hacksaw.
