DeKups or 3m pps? HEEEEEELP

As many of you know, by now, I'm a sick puppy who is allergic to almost everything.... the papers called me Allergic to 21st Century (load of crap)

However I do everything myself, that I can, and take handfuls of painkillers.... the only real problem is that it takes me a long time, what with several days recovery from even the simplest thing.

I cannot paint with water-based or acrylics as it takes a lot of recovery time... I use polyester and 2pak with less problems than ordinary flat and gloss paints (white spirit can take a fortnight to get over and thats at a distance)

So I have an airfed mask and carbon filters but have decided to go for a spray reduction system to drastically cut down the amount of thinners... especially when cleaning up

What I am interested in...... from those who have used them.... is which is better?? the 3M paint protection system (3M PPS) or DeKups from devilbiss

BOTH reduce cleaning to a minimum (the greatest source of exposure to solvents) and enable spraying "gravity guns" at ANY angle and un-hardened paint can be stored, in them, indefinitely.

BOTH cost about £120 for a full (170cc "smart repair" AND 600cc standard setups) BUT WHICH IS BEST????????

I like dialogue and I like minutae.... fine detail, PLUS opinions

I spray primer, basecoat, topcoat, 1k lacquer, 2k lacquer, pearl, mica, sparkles (used to be called pearl) and metalflake.

I don't spray a lot because of the huge downside from the materials

My record (for which I got an official warning from DVLA) was my landrover had 5 different colours in one year and I did 3 "partials"..... If I don't like its design, I have a hacksaw.... if I get bored, I paint it (but not as much now as in the 70s)

On paper there isn't really much between the two systems with the DeKups working out a bit cheaper to run. In reality it is easy to get the 3m cups and lids at a greater discount here in the UK (ebay). It can work out quite expensive if you are doing small panels often,less so if you are doing bigger jobs. I use PPS just for base and traditional for clear unless it's something specific like a rollcage or inside a car where turning the gun upside down is a advantage.

A local paint supplier to me stocks a norton system and it cheaper than anything else I have seen, not sure if it's available everywhere but it is very similar to 3m system
I was considering it myself but as I use a devilbiss sri pro I tend to mix a full cup of paint and keep adding it to the pot, so not sure if I would benefit as I think topping them up is not easy.

thanks for the opinions.... I suspect there are a lot more out there.... please!!!

I like that with both systems you can mix in the liner and that you can spray at any angle

However MY main consideration, apart from cost (disabled retired and no income, just the wifes pension) is reducing my exposure to solvents etc

as a pointer... exposure to white spirit aroma in my vets, 6 hours after they stopped painting, caused severe hangover/migraine with 300mg (10 tabs) codeine every 2 hrs for 4 days in the dark.... walking around the supermarket, but not baby or soap isles, gives 2 days of pain with 120mg codeine and paracetamol..... THIS is the reaction(s) I am trying to reduce.

It must seem odd to anybody not in my position.... and I hope none of you ever will be.

the problem with allergic reactions and "sensitivities" (the term given to allergic reactions that do not produce hystamine reactions...) is that they are not often "logical" to most people.

I have little problem with toluene but massive reaction to alcohol.... and I do not even have to come in contact with it.... most reactions are from "volatiles" or fumes.

I find cellulose and 2k the least reactive, whilst acrylics and water bases are amongst the worst..... I have little problem with old fashioned distempers but they cannot be used on vehicles (if you don't remember they were before "plastic" emulsions and the colour came off on your hands)

most "robust" finishes cause problems and "environmentally kind" rate amongst the worse..... one problem (not part of the thread) is that the jolly old eu has decided to ban "original" 2k (the polyester type) as it is "not nice" enough for the greenies.... they are doing the same to cellulose for the same reason.... they will be illegal to commercially spray and its unlikely there are enough "hobbyists" to make them economically.

my life is weird, with lists of hundreds of foods and products that I react to and avoid....... example, I have no teeth (a side effect of medication that caused their loss) and cannot have false ones as I am allergic to dental acrylic and reacted badly to the nice pure titanium ones they made me (anybody remember jaws in 007)

The only thing that ever affected me badly was some chlorinated rubber floor paint we used at work. I had TB about 30 years ago and it left me a bit lacking in lung capacity and I do get out of breath and wheezy sometimes but some hours after using the floor paint I was in bed and woke up struggling for breath and covered in sweat and had to have a couple of days off to recover.

I said I was covered in sweat not breaking out in a cold sweat. It takes me longer than a couple of days to recover from a wallet attack.
