It really is mind boggling that he took it so close to shore.

that is one big insurance loss, it will be taken to Italy and cut up, I would have thought they would have had a survey on it once in dry dock and maybe repaired it if possible given the amount it costs to replace it

Remember the Achille Lauro, hijacked by the PLF in the 80's, a hideous story that was; I think made into a film that I cant remember the title of, last seen on fire and sinking off Somalia.
I reckon an ocean liner with a reputation would be a ghost ship.

The engineering is amazing, but I am not going to watch the whole caboodle live. I will be checking back every now and again. The Captain was a plonker and a cad.
Plonker for hitting rocks so close to shore, and a Cad for 'falling' into a life boat.
He may have saved a lot of lives by beaching his ship; still deserves his lot afterwards.

Partially. But I think also it would have been too heavily modified and damaged by the salvage operation alone to restore the costa back to her former self so it just wouldn't be cost effective to do so.

The Achille Lauro had a hilarious career involving all sorts of mishaps. Being hijacked was just one in a series of misfortunes including collisons....

A friend of mine travelled on it to Australia on the "ten pound ticket" and said it was a shed even then!

I suspect the side still coming out of the water is very heavily damaged or even stove in by the underwater rocks never mind what the salvage operation will have damaged.

If it was just steel hull work it might be repairable, but think of all the systems that have been destroyed, the engine room with its banks of main engines & generators, all the electrical systems, plumbing, furnishings, safety systems the lot all underwater since she sank.
Plus a full cargo of hundreds of tons of perishable food for several thousand people all rotting in her holds & freezers. Thats going to stink to high heaven.
Rebuild is out of the question.

id think they'll strap it back together and sell it to some operator somewhere.

all you need to do is look at the stuff there useing round african regions. most of there ferrys ect more sink in a contolled manner rather than float
