Hi Guys,
How much welding would you expect to get out of a Hobby weld 9.5 litre bottle at 150bar?
I know It should yield 2.4 hours at 10lpm and 4.8h at 5lpm. But what should a practices TIG welder be able to put down for that?
I've recently got a new R-Tech 200Amp DC only TIG welder. Love the welder.
I'm a completely novice TIG welder. I burnt through my first bottle in a weekend, I'm pretty sure that one was down to leaving the bottle open overnight and a gentle leak out the welder while off. So I'm religious about closing it when I step away now. I also think the first bottle went quick because I was running high LPM for what I did, had too long a post flow and was generally taking to long to weld.
But I'm not down to 60bar on my second bottle. Its gone further definitely, but I've not welded much more than a meter total, This is getting expensive in just Argon at £60 a fill. I don't have a separate flow meter (I'm using the dial on the regulator.)
I am using a gas lens and I've done various welding from thin stuff sub 1mm to 3mm place corner joints. I'm generally running sub 5lpm now and have used the guide on this site to set my post flow to 1 second per 10amps. (first bottle was 8 second mostly 6 before the above rule was found)
Am I being a Muppet in buying these bottles? I can get the ultra fill 20ltr 300 bar beasts but the deposit is expensive and the fill charge is too, though from what I've calculated you get the gas for cheaper. But only for about 30% cheaper I think.
Am I better going to Air Products or BOC for a rental while I'm learning? (or are they similar costs for greater volume?)
Am I still doing things wrong and using too much gas?
It possible I'm running to low amperage and not forming my puddle quick enough and welding slowly.I have been a bit timid to start with.
Or is TIG welding just this expensive?
Thanks in advance.
