Today around town I tried to buy a simple plunger in a tapered hole that will sit on top of a wine bottle so I can slip a softened wine cork into a bottle or three dozen of homemade wine. I drew blank looks from every where I went .
So I made one up on my lathe.
All it is , is a five inch long rod of black Delrin 18 mm in dia tapered down to 12 mm @ 7% at one end . At the other end I turned a shoulder & 16 mm peg to fit into a 25 mm thick 35 mm dia button . This forms the plunger to press the corks down
I then turned up some scrap burnt Delrin ( rescued from my little bench burn up of the other day ) that originally was 3 inches in dia down to a 2 inch diameter , faced both ends to give a 45 mm dia x 52 mm blank bar .
Drilled it right through it's axis to 19 mm then opened up one end @7% to give a taper almost right through the blank to make a sleeve . So that as a steam softened cork is pushed through , it compresses through the final width of 25 mm which is approx. 0.5 mm less than the average internal width of a wine bottle neck.
On the other face I turned in seating two rings , one the dia of champagne bottle outer neck and one the outer dia of a standard wine bottle . Done so the sleeve will sit well on either a wine or champagne bottle neck .
Gave it a road test on both types of bottle .. I'm well impressed.
