Converting a wood benchsaw to steel.

I was wondering if anyone can see any reason why I cannot take the wood cutting disc out of the bench saw and use a 9" metal cutting disc, the reason I would like to do this is to use it to cut sheet steel acurate & quick.

I know I will need a new spacer/shim to hold & place the disc and it's a little larger than the wood cutting disc.

Also what is the thinest 9" cutting disc you can buy, I use 1.1mm for my small angle grinder and find these great.

Having just removed several TCT tips from my Circular saw by cutting through floorboard nails, I have been looking for a multi use blade, not just HSS or TCT.

Rage Evolution, drum roll loud music etc. say their blades can cut all (ok not ALL) materials. Perhaps an arbor & nut or screw, adaption to allow their blades to fit would be an idea? They as far as I see are also TCT Tipped.

I have a 100mm Angle grinder & thought a little lathe work along similar lines to allow 115mm disks would be good. Just need a lathe & workshop & power to the workshop (don't go there).... to complete. Gently & bit by bit the parts are aquired.

It spins too fast... For steel anyway. The surface speed of the blade teeth is far far outside the range they need to be in to last any length of time, they will simply overheat and blunt rapidly. I doubt the evolution rage saws spin as quick as the normal ones, which lets them work their magic.

If you need to cut ally just leave the wood blade on there and use lots of paraffin or wd40 lube

I just want it to cut mild steel upto and around 1mm, just like an angle grinder but solid mounted and a flat surface to work from, well that the idea.

your not talking TCT here are you??? never spin a TCT in a machine that its not made for, a local engineer (who should have know better) decided to put a TCT in a carbon bladed chop saw, He now has one eye......

I'm with all the above comments the TCT blade wouldn't stand the speed without wearing out and could shatter and maim/kill you!!

Just had a quick look, I dont mean TCT, that was mentioned but not by me.

Hmm abrasive cutting discs would be dangerous in a table saw as the disc is very good at gripping things EG THE METAL and would quickly rip it toward the blade taking your fingers with it more than likely!!

9" abrasive discs need to run @ about 6.000rpm, table saws 10" about 4000rpm, 10" TCT steel cutting blades 2500rpm

Can you adapt your sawtable to use an angle grinder as power sorce or betterstill fit a high speed motor to table, at least 1200w (1.5Hp)

Dont have more than 15mm of disc above the work & use an antikickback device.

Wear full face visor + safety specs & dust mask.

No one's mentioned that spinning abrasive blades too slow causes them to wear out very quickly..

This is the reason that (if you don't force them) the blades seem to last a while, then wear out really quickly at the end... The radial velocity is much lower as you loose diameter... the abrasive wears much more quickly when it gets below it's best speed...

I just had an idea... make an angle grinder that senses disk diameter, and speeds up as it wears, thus getting the longest possible life from your disks!...

Slower. The angular velocity (rpm) remains the same, the circumference reduces as it wears, so the distance travelled (m/sec) by a point on the circumference is less in the same time.

So the answer is realy there is know reason I cannot do this, i'm not bothered about disc life as there cheap anyway. It will just be for mild plate upto 1mm thick lightly run through.
It would be one of those handy tools that I want but is not avalible to buy, would be easyer to buy a band saw for cutting steel but that costs money and this would be a cheap answer with what I got.

Right ive done it, well sort of, I thought of it and Wyn shimed it up to work. Had a little experement with 0.8mm mild sheet and "without taking my time and rushing it" cuts very straight and easy, much straighter than a band/jig saw. It does have its limitations and you do need a full face mask (goggles no good) as a few sparks come upwards but not to many.

Buy a metal cutting TCT Blade

If your machine was designed for TCT Blades, why not just buy a TCT Metal Cutting blade? Most of them come with a 1" bore but that can be gored out by a good blade supplier. Try Bandsaw Service Limited at Windsor - they will do mail order with credit card. Their number is 01753 862029 and they are very helpful.
