Following myself and my son in law finishing the garage base I thought I’d look for a cheap mixer on Gumtree so I can knock up the walls.
I found a rough one with a knackered drum in Bristol for £50 so thought I’d take a shot at it and if the drum was too far gone I’d buy a new drum at £101 off the net. I mentioned to my SIL and ask if there were any drums kicking around in work in better condition.
He came home the following day as I was leaving to collect the mixer and says “I had you a mixer in work for free but the drum is shot”!
Now I LOVE free so thought I’d take a look and see if I could repair the drum and if not then I’d buy a drum as it’d still be cheap a mixer.
I thought about rebar but making a loop from 16mm rebar was not gonna be easy. I then remembered I had some 20mm black jap mild steel conduit and an old Hilmar bender, so a plan was formulating.
This was the result. You can see how far gone the drum was.
So I basically cut off the return with a slitting disc, welded the ring to the edge then started belting lumps out of the lip until it was formed around the conduit and welded as I went.
This was the result. Not pretty but practical.
I then scuffed up the outside with a couple of flap discs on my trusty 115mm grinder and slapped a coat of red Rustoleum on the resultant mess. I should of course have waited until I’d ordered the correct Ral2004 colour but I have no patience.
I also ordered a new top cover complete with hinges and handles for £34 so all in all a very cheap mixer.
