Hi all I have trouble with Cleaning aluminium that been laying around.i can clean it then have a lovely bead going then comes the crud.what method Do you all use
Ceramic discs are ok for it. The problem arises with abrasives that clog or smear the aluminium. Then you get arc and contamination issues.I just use an angle grinder with a ceramic flap disc. I know most people say it is wrong to do that but the Alu I use has been sitting in a heavy salt atmosphere for quite a while in most cases and has quite a bit of oxidisation.
Here is a sample of one I did the last day, weld seems clean enough to me and you can see what the Alu was like if you look at the top of the pic, above the grind marks.

Ceramic is an abrasive, the flap discs I use are from Wurth, similar to standard flap discs but last a lot longer and continue cutting until they are almost worn to the bone. They are expensive but outlast others I have used by at least 3 times. Thanks everyone. What's the difference in ceramic and abrasive
