Hi, my name is Andrew and I am currently having new sills and archs put in an old civic I picked up to use as a runaround as believe it or not it does 45mpg and costs nothing to tax or insure, (£200 pa all in!!!).
I paid peanuts for it however knew it needed new sills and archs so took it to a garage locally and they have cut out the sills and I took some pictures, which are below.
The guy at the garage tells me that he will cut the worst of the rust out and then reform the ridge for the outer sill to connect to at the bottom of the inner sill by welding plates along the floor to form a new ridge. These plates are needed anyway as the floor is rusted badly in places.
My question is this however, is it normal to just remove the 'worst' of the rust and weld over with plates etc basically trapping some old rust in? I intend to underseal with gravitex and inject the sill void with waxoyl when it is done if that information helps when considering an answer, and I should probably also point out that this is not a full restoration but really to just keep the car going for another couple of years.
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated and thank you in advance,
Regards
Andrew
