I have 3 clasic cars that i will be reprotecting on the underside,one of the cars had a rust problem and the rust has been cut away and replaced with new metal, i want to know what is the best paint system to use,money no object within reason,por 15 just sounds like its yanks with good advertising,usually i use davids zinc primer which is only ok,it must be better than this, i was looking at epoxymastic 2 pk but im not sure,just when im doing this job i want to do it right,all hepl appreciated

Your right about por 15 rubbish, quality 2k epoxy primer then 2k paint is one of the best to use. Or 2k stonechip on top of 2k epoxy primer then 2k paint, is another option.

ive never had success painting over stonechip,is that not best left till last?

Try using plastic primer on top of paintable stonechip paint, its the adhesion clear type, it bonds very well.

As someone who's actually used them... automotive 2k epoxy + 2k colour is good. Stonechip too if you like, inbetween. I also like Jotamastic, sprays OK, brush or roller too if not fussed about marks. It's pretty tough stuff.
So for posh, spray either type of epoxy and colour coat etc as you like.
To just get the job done you can brush either, though you will get brushmarks.

I have, heres the wifes car I painted in 2003 with epoxy primer and 2K COB, Pic taken last saturday, It lasts well.

So how come all the beginner questions about epoxy and 2k, odd statements like turning 2k tins upside down, not knowing what was on your car, etc etc.

Because i have recently bought a load and will want to save whats left for a later date, i heard from somewhere it prevents a skin forming but unsure if thats on cell or 2k.

Dont worry i wont bother helping anyone out, ill leave it to the usual ones that tell them about it all from now on.

That must be on 2K, celly lasts forever, provided the tin is kept tightly shut. I have seen 20+ year old cellulose being sprayed with great results.

As for underbody protection, I've used zinc primer on rust repairs (cleaned to bare metal), then seam sealed in any welds and seams, stone chip coated, then sprayed with a couple of coats of chassis black, and finally underbody wax. Yes, belt and braces but seems to last well, even through einters and wet weather.....

I agree, although epoxy primer is the best all rounder, there are other just as suitable methods like the above, of which is how my car has been done.

It would be an idea to get the wax that is non sticky, so road dirt etc wont stick to it.

They use Epoxy primer to protect Oil rigs.

From what ive seen they also use 90% zinc primer for them too. Cars dont have as much water as a rig especially when a classic car is mostly used on good days.

well im getting closer to painting this car so i contacted the guy i was going to get to respray the top half of the car,and i asked him about what sort of primer should i use on the car and he suggested that i should use etch primer under the 2k epoxy,now ive been using jotan 2k epoxy on the bits inside the sills and i believe its a fine paint but on occasion ive had to remove som paint after its been dried before welding and it seems slightly easier to remove than the stock primer originally used on the car so i wondered if the epoxys sticking properties were less than this etch that ive not used?

Sorry to muscle in. Chipper can you just use celly or gunwash thinners to thin jotamastic. I brushed it on last project but fancy spraying it on next one to ssve time..

Get another painter, that one is talking rubbish !!!
