Ceiling material choices

My garage is single brick with a traditional tiled roof with trusses, so is quite high.
In order to retain some of the heat, I‘m thinking of putting up a ceiling but what would be the best choice for material?
If I can get some heat retention, I may go to insulating the walls eventually….
I’ve ruled out plasterboard due to the damp atmosphere….

Any suggestions?

Thanks, I got my eye on 9mm osb for £18/sheet from a local supplier…

I saw a previous thread which showed the use of osb quite effectively, after I started this thread….
So out shopping for 6 sheets…hoping the supplier can cut them lengthways for me too….( won’t go in the car! )

Erm...moisture resistant plasterboard? Works in bathrooms.

Much more expensive than osb…..( plus I forgot about that too…. )

My local Wickes does Knauf Fire Panel tapered edge plaster board for £21…

That might be a consideration, going in a garage, has fire retardant properties ….only issue is the manual handling aspect due to its weight and size….

Id go osb, and get the 8x4 sheets delivered by a builders merchant. The big advantage of an account is free delivery. Then borrow or hire a board lifter to fit full boards. Leave a hatch to-get up there too

I bought one of the cheap amazon/ebay board lifters to do a one off job. I had no one to help me and wanted to get it done. Easily sold it on FB for a £40 loss. Way cheaper than hiring one and no pressure to return it in a hurry. They make an otherwise impossible job to do single handed, dead easy.

Not impossible, my late dad did it for the whole house. He made a pair of floor brush like shaped poles (from roof batten or similar). He would hoist the sheet over his head, walk it into place, then use a “pole with a tee” to wedge it into place one end, another in the middle, and taking a nail or three from his lips, hammer from his rule pocket, bang bang, up it went. For a simple lorry driver he did some amazing stuff, which at the time I thought nothing of...

Board lifter every time afaiac!

Also measure your joist centres and mark lines on the boards before putting them up. Saves putting screws into thin air!

Insulate above, with your choice of stuff, then marine plasterboard, stuff for bathrooms.

And as @Onoff said beg, borrow or hire a plaster board lift for a day.

If height is no problem you could use second hand insulated fridge panels, very rigid and they interlock so no wastage, no need to paint and they wipe clean.

...or secondhand fridges and have handy ceiling storage cupboards.

i used a free method a couple of 3x2 lengths of 12"

2 screwed to the wall 4x2s for the first and last piece and the ones in the middle was screwed through the board so they could be spun

IMO best sort that out first, any covering will only make it worse and you won't see all the benefits of the insulation with damp air.

There’s not a lot I can do with that….the bricks are like sponges when it rains, although I’ve sprayed Thompsons Water seal on the outside walls from day1 to prevent ingress..short of building an internal skin of breeze block..expensive and takes up floor space....

Compromises..…eh?
