Was talking to my welder mate yesterday about getting me some argoshield light for my new welder and he told me to have deep pockets as the price of gas has gone through the roof and companies are now charging daily rental on bottles??? Is this true??? Hope not as im doing a car resto project but this may go on for a year or more and would cost me a fortune in daily charges.

What he did say was try and get yourself an empty bottle from somewhere then just get it refilled.

So i had a good scout round our workshops and found these

One of the lads said they were oxy acetaline bottles from Air Products and both are empty.

Could i get these refilled with the gas i require and save myself the daily charges or not????

The answer to the question about refilling and not paying rental is no. yearly rental is about £80 on a bottle the cost of the gas depends on what size you get. if you had an air products argon/co2 bottle you could do a bottle shuffle and save on rental

I think maybe air products charge by the day, but it doesn't work out more expensive as it's a yearly rent divided by 365, or somesuch. Your mate's talking pants Chris. The prices havn't changed.
You can't get the bottles refilled. It's exchange only on the whole, and the right gas has to go into the right bottles. There are major safety issues over putting oxygen into a co2 bottle etc etc. If you need me to explain why.... well you shouldn't be allowed to cross the road unaccompanied

Just joshing mate, but it's true, the right bottle for the right gas, endaestory.

And Chris, why do you have to have someone else tell you they're AP oxy and acet, when it's written on the side?

NO, NO, NO! Several posts recently asking the same thing, you MUST use the correct cylinder for the type of gas, it's the only SAFE way to do things. There's so many risks involved it's just not worth the risk. No gas dealer in their right mind would fill an oxy or acetylene cylinder with any other gas than it's designed for. Unfortunately, if you want gas you have to pay their prices, we're all in the same boat Chris.

Because only one bottle had a label on. The maroon coloured one had nothing whatsoever to indicate what was in it. + i know diddly squat about gas apart from if you smell it then ring the free phone number on the back of the van

chris with Airproducts rental is daily, and how the bottle shuffle works is you go get yourself an AP account and rent a bottle excatly the same size and type as you have spare. have the bottle for a week or two, then take the empty one back to them and say thanks guys, ive done the job i needed to and returned the bottle. That way you get charged for 2 weeks rental and the cost of the gas, you have to remember they arent dumb so dont rent the bottle on monday and take it back tuesday, they might work out what your doing and spoil your fun. You could do the same with the oxygen and the acetylene, but obviously you need to get the torch pipes and regs, dam handy stuff to have, you can heat things that stick and get them moving again.

I'm pretty sure the "procedure of Irondarren" is illegal. Nice name for it though.

EDIT: Just seen your thread, it's locked now so I'll ask here; do you already have the empty bottles or just seen them on eBay and were thinking of buying them?
