can anyone make me driveshafts?

im building a mk1 fiesta with a honda engine, i have cut and welded the ford end to the honda end but i tonight discovered they are slightly out of alignment
So im looking to have a pair machined, i can supply the material and a pattern to make it to but i need someone to machine them for me.

The small engineering company I work for could probably knock you one up for a reasonable price. I dont know if Dorchester is too far for you to travel. I expect you could find a company a bit closer. Let me know if you want the phone number to have a chat with our turner.

No dimensions at hand but I can measure them tonight, i think doing the grooving for the CV and trilobe will be the hardest to do.

Not with the splines .....NO............I've not removed any ford shafts ,wanted to make sure they did have splines .....you had a wander around Bumpers farm yet?

I'm not 100%,probably "hobbed" like a gear to machine the splines,I'd think its a long job on even a cnc mill and dividing head,,,,,I'll await an expert to tell me i'm wrong though

If you have access to even a small lathe you can do the splines by hand by feeding a ground bit across them on the slide, takes ages and you need to index the bar to get them lined up, but possible

Just had a quote of £70 per shaft inc the materials, I think that sounds reasonable that.

AFAIK The splines are usually broached. Plenty of companies that do this type of work. give zcars a call and ask them for someone, they might even supply.

I had quotes in the past and they were all coming in around £400 a shaft, the quote i just got was on a recommendation and he makes them up in his own garden workshop.

The honda engine has no torque 115 ftlb and he says they are made from the right materials.

I just need the bank manager/missus to allow me to spend the funds

Sounds reasonable to me...there is a few more on here that could machine the shafts,so wait at least until tonight...you sure that's not just to look and quote?.....that's what I would charge.....

As you have suitable ends you could just make up a tubular sleeve with the right central bores for each end.

Simple to make & fit.

Plus no alignment issues like you had trying to weld it end to end.

Welded driveshafts aren't brilliant though, 'specially if you can get a new on for £80...

Id love to make them myself as i have made 99% of the rest of the stuff so it would be nice to say i made that but I think in the case of drive shafts im better off having someone make them from a single piece of metal.

im going to swap the one i fitted tonight for the other as i made a proper jug to weld that one in so it "may" be straighter.

£80 seems very cheap for custom shafts.

That sounds very reasonable to me. I presume a new one is quite a few pennies more than that. Im not sure how our turner will deal with the splines or whether he would turn his nose up at it or not. I wont know until I ask tomorrow. It does sound that the £70 jobbies are favourite though, so far.
