Well I've decided it's time to start looking seriously for a lathe. I don't have an immediate need so can take my time looking till the right one comes along. Spindle bore does need to be >25mm.
I'd prefer an old(ish) British model circa '50s - '70s in un-restored condition with a budget up to £1K. I'm not looking to use it for precision work (yet!) so I'm expecting typical wear and tear from a machine of that vintage.
So, what are the makes to look out for and which to avoid?
What areas of wear should I be looking for - what's the best way to evaluate wear in the ways and spindle?
Finally, transport.. the type of machine I'm looking at weigh 800Kg and up - is it a case of leaving it to the professionals and paying someone to move it?
