Within the next few weeks i’ll be buying myself tig welder, I have a budget of around £1k for the welder give or take a few quid.
I am not new to welding in general, having some mig experience but I am totally new to tig welding only ever having a quick go on a friends dc machine on a scrap piece of stainless.
In the past I have needed things repairing such as motorcycle rear subframes, sumps, radiators etc… and have always passed them to a mate to have done at work – cheap enough but sometimes having to wait a week or so before getting them back, which can be a pain if you want to be getting on with something, so I thought it about time I invested and learnt how to use one myself.
After a bit of reading up on this forum and the internet in general I think I have decided on the r-tech 160 or 200amp ac/dc.
The 160amp model would probably be more than capable for my needs but was considering the larger 200amp as a ‘just in case’, portability isn’t an issue as it won’t be needed outside my garage and I can’t see duty cycles being much of an issue either.
My question is:-
Before taking the plunge and blowing my dosh, what other machines in this price bracket would be worth considering?
I have looked at quite a few i.e. portamig tec-tig, sip, tec-arc etc… plus a few cheaper models on ebay from china
Knowing very little about tig machines it all becomes a bit confusing when reading specs.
p.s
Once the machine has been purchased I’m hoping to glean some more information from the knowledgeable on here on how to use the thing.
I might even post some pictures of my first welds to give you all a good laugh.
