I saw that Gateros sell "plating wands", so I googled what it is for, and it looks really useful, in this video there's a huge precision flange of some sort with deep scortch marks that get perfectly fixed using brush plating:

I've got some irreplaceable custom flanges on my car so it's nice to know that if they get damaged I could fix them.
I think brush plating uses nickel. Having had to drill some mount hole on my nickel anodes last weekend, I can say nickel is very tough !
