A BOC Gases 'X' size cylinder, which is virtually the same capacity as the Air Products equivalent contains 2420 Litres of compressed gas, compared to 60 Litres in the standard size disposable canisters, which = 40x the gas.
So, using the general recommended 10 Litres Per Minute you would get
approximately 4 hours welding from that size cylinder (compared to 6 minutes continuous welding from the disposable canisters).

Quite a big saving in the long run using refilables. I've experienced a difference in life in using the disposables. I noticed a couple of them discharged themselves over night probably due to leaky valves. Others you wonder if they have been filled correctly.
With the gauges on the refilables you can see what you get on on pick up and while in use.
Absoloutely.
You should dissconnect the regulator from the disposables when not in use as they can leak (they have a self sealing valve when dissconnected). I do get the odd one that's supplied empty aswell.
Given the maths though, you can see that the rental & transaction charges on the refillables really is irrelevant when compared to the cost of disposables.

When I'm not using the mig I always disconnect the regulator from the disposables. One of the bottles I had leaked out as soon as the regulator was disconnected.
I've lost count how many I have bought over the years. I wish I had switched to refillables years ago.
I am at present doing a bit of welding on the wifes MK1 Escort replacing the strut cage and a bit of the floor. She used to have old Beetles which I was for ever welding and got right fed up with them. I dont have a garage big enough to get the cars in to weld them so I do it outside. Weather permiting of course.
Hi, i have a question :
To open an account at BOC or any other supplier do you have to be registered buisness or can we as joe public open one ie no proof of working for yourself company details etc.
Also can some one explain how to go about it id required etc
Any body can open an account with BOC you just need you bank details to start a direct debit for the rental on the bottle, and for any other transactions. I paid up front for my first bottle and gas. Don
Well go on direct debit then! What's the problem? you do that (presumably) with BT etc.etc. I really cannot see this problem with peoples reluctance to pay an 'expensive' annual rental on a gas cylinder! It works out at less than a pint a week!! Run it on disposables & see what that costs you over 12 months.
