Bottle Pressure

Hi,

I am new to this forum. Have just inherited my bros welder as he doesnt use it now. I am using it for a gate project. I use to do bits of welding about 10yrs ago and not done much since. The welder I have got is a SIP Ideal 240. It has got a 20ltr argon bottle on it and it is showing just under 10 bar pressure. The welds I have done dont look to bad but does splatter a bit, also shows brown patchs either side. The regulator is set to 10ltrs a min.

Main question is how empty does the bottle have to be to get it refilled? When it is down to less than 10bar pressure will this affect it? Is the brown dust due to lack of gas?

Mine works well after the gauge reads 0. I think it still has about 200PSI at 0.

The pressure is a direct measure of the amount of gas ledd. If it is 50% of the filled pressure, 50% is left.

if your welding outside turn it up to about 15ltrs per minute.
spatter will be down to incorrect settings or dirty material.
clean back to decent metal and turn gas up a bit
is the gas co2 argon or pure argon?
the latter aint really suitable for mild steel.

I use mine until it runs out, well past thye empty mark on the reg, usually on a Friday before a bank holiday weekend. You wil know when it runs out, sputter sputter etc.

Can you post up a pic of your welder please? I have a very old SIP Ideal, but it has no indication on it as to what size machine it really is! It doesent even say it's an SIP (which could be a good thing I guess!). I have a feeling its about 200 Amps or so but I can't be sure.

You're not the only one. Mine was usually a case of the boss had forgotten to place the order with the gas suppliers to replace the empties.

I usually keep a co2 cylinder spare for when I want a bit more mobility but then am too idle to change it when I'm back in the shed so it's always nearly empty next time I need it. The brown dust is just oxides from the steel melting, are you sure you didn't get it before as I always have and it's not a problem.
