Blacksmith’s Vice

I have one, was thinking of getting rid of it but I’ve decided to keep it.

I want it near this outside work table but I don’t want it fitted onto the table as I like to keep the table clean with a flat surface

what are my options for a stand? Does it need to be heavy?

ive seen those inverted truck brake drums with RSJ etc, are these good enough? Will they need to be weighted at the bottom

That looks very good and certainly gives me some ideas

I didn’t understand how it’s weighted, hence having a heavy base was causing some confusion

i now understand the need for that plate to stand on. With my “athletic frame” stood on it it won’t be going anywhere ...............

Glad it was of some use to you. The large base plate itself is really heavy, being made of 1/2" steel, and yes, with the user standing on it (as intended), it's even more stable.

I’ve got 6mm plate and enough bits in the scrap pile to make a version of that

I won’t be adding wheels as it won’t be moving from its spot

as it will live outside I may spray the vice with galvanaiding spray. Yes I know it’s not right ......

As much as I hate to say it, YouTube may be your friend on this one!

I had this issue with mine and spent time looking at what others have done.

two things seemed important
1. Have the leg touching the floor and
2. Some means of the leg not moving. Ring welded on your plate or whatever.

I welded an RSJ to an flange and bolted that to the floor. Ring welded on for bottom of leg. Flange welded on top of RSJ to bolt vice to. Seems to work ok.

Thanks. I hope to have some time soon to fire up a forge and put the vice to use again. Smithing is fun and great therapy in Covid times, but I've been too busy with a dozen other projects lately.
