Bl**dy carriers!!!

Had delivery in today, I thought it seemed a bit wobbly on the pallet and sure enough there was some damage to the side of the box I couldnt see from the roadside until I'd lifted the delivery off the truck.
I could see some damage to the packaging and there are notes taped top and sides saying it has to be checked in the presence of the delivery driver. I'm glad I checked as this is what I found underneath the cardboard and packaging.

Brand new Arcgen Weldmaker 165, makes you sick doesn't it?
Arcgen were good as gold and another ones coming tomorrow, fingers crossed it has better luck than it's predecessor.

Yeah, the guy delivering it must be so used to this kind of thing he didn't even bother to look or sound apologetic, in fact I said sorry to him for making him wait 2 mins while I unpacked it and took a pic on my phone!

That sucks big time! Looks like it sustained a hell of a drop! I see stuff like that all too common in work. Good job on inspecting it before the driver left. IMO instapak is a good way to go for packaging delicate components, not that you have any control on the senders packing.......Anyways. Hope the insurance sorts it without hassle.

It will be fine thanks, it's not my problem but I feel bad for Arcgen though and my customer who was expecting his machine today.
How's this for a coincidence, the customer asked me how much to fit a socket for a remote, with a switch and a 20 metre remote, I had a quick mull over, small metal enclosure, triple pole single throw toggle switch, a plug, socket panel socket, pot, wiring 20 metres of cable, metal box for remote and a legend plate plus D handle to pritect the pot if you drop the thing. £420 fitted, including the remote.
I thought I'd ask Arcgen, see if they could do it and save me a job. They can, £411 for a remote socket and switch, no remote and cable though, I'm selling my work too cheap it seems!

I'm actually tempted to put a cheeky bid on it and add it to the hire fleet. A casing is about £600 last time I had one so its got to be more for a MKII.
£2000 sounds about right! Lol

whats wrong with pannel beating the damaged one and a bit of paint if its gonna go on hire that wouldnt take 2 long to square up certainly not 600 quids worth

I would straighten it out if it was for me, but it's not and I don't want to pay full price for a machine that's fallen off a lorry.

We bring in industrial x-ray systems from Comet in Switzerland and their packing cases are works of art - but when an x-ray head alone can cost £33K it needs to be done right!

We have the same trouble sometimes. Especially for the customers in the further reaches of the UK, such as Lowestoft, Aberdeen etc. By the time the machine arrives with them direct from the German factory it may of been onloaded/offloaded around 4/5 times and gone via 2-3 freight companies.

It always tends to be the machine that you or your customer is most desperate for that ends up damaged too.

you are spot on there, the trouble is many shippers do not realise what is involved in getting their product from them to the customer and what other goods may be sitting on top of theirs, good packaging is vital if you want to lower the damage risk, but this costs money and time so this gets skimped on a lot of times, one customer thought it was acceptable to put glass shades into any old box and expect it to get to the customer in one piece,

the simple rule for fragile goods costing thousands is to same day it on a dedicated van that goes straight from a to b, it will cost more for delivery but damage is far far less likely

Lots of problems with general freight destroyers over the years, if something has sentimental value, the only way to guarantee it arriving is to take it yourself really.
My mrs just had a longarm quilting machine + frame sent over, that was supposed to be end to end in a single hop in a van via a shipley booking because it had potential for damage and loss, which turned out to be somene who nipped round in his van to the collection address and brought it home then booked it cheap general freight with one of the well known budget parcel destroyers who managed to loose the main transformer en route and Ive just finished repairing the damage to the longarm machine itself and she is running it on one of my transformers for now while the mess is being sorted out. So apparently shipley is equally as full of con artists and misrepresentation as other freight options, its like the ebay of the shipping world!

thats what you get for using a freight moving auction site, good luck with getting compo, bet you never even checked they had insurance that covers what you had, and even where its going, git insurance (goods in transit insurance) does NOT cover all things carried automatically, most certainly wont cover who you give the job to passing it to another carrier, shiply wont want to know,they will tell you its the carrier you have issue with, and the carrier will blame the other carrier, and on and on it will go, but a bit of advise for you, its the carrier who came and took the goods who you need to go after, shiply is not the carrier and you did`nt pay shiply, all you payed shiply for was for the use of the site

Actually she did, and she paid extra for the insurance. The quagmire at the moment is that the re-shipper has not filed a claim, even though the bulk carrier who lost the transformer in transit has acknowledged it is a valid claim and its their liability (in fact they can identify the exact vehicle it disappeared on) & will deal with it. I cant think what financial benefit that would be to the reshipper not to do so but thats the issue, so its with the card payments dept and trading standards now. And yes shipley have been useless, just like you would expect.
I did caution her not to use shipley full stop because of concerns, but her friends told her it was ok. Im just glad they didnt loose the long arm machine itself too, just kick it round a bit and break some controls.
Parcels please and parcel monkey have both lost things in transit for me, but at least the insurance paid out afterwards.
I see people recommending shipley round here to get things shipped occasionally, caveat emptor, like dunk says you have no real protection when it goes wrong.
