Just in case any of you weren't aware of these rules.
Lady near us has a mobile catering business. She tows a box trailer full of her stuff to the venues behind a double-cab (Ranger I think) and was recently stopped on the way to an event.
She is being prosecuted on two counts:
1) Her trailer had a rating plate on it stating max gross 3500Kg, but her truck is only rated to tow 2900Kg. She was nowhere near the trucks 2900 limit but is being done because she could tow too much in that particular trailer.
2) Because the truck itself has a 1000Kg payload capacity and a 2900Kg towing capacity, giving a total of 3900 ie above the 3500Kg threshold, and she was using it for commercial / business purposes she should have been running a tachograph.
If, like me, you have a 3500Kg gross IW trailer but don't necessarily need that capacity, Ifor Williams will supply a downrated plate stamped up to match your towing vehicle. They will only send it to one of their registered dealers in your area though, and the dealer has to fit it.
VOSA are flexing their newly aquired muscles - you have been warned.
